Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a fatal disease of the nervous system. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure. It attacks the nerve cells that send messages from the brain to the muscles. As these cells gradually die, the muscles stop working. The body slowly deteriorates, and sufferers lose the ability to move their limbs, talk and swallow. Marjorie Carswell was my dear nan , everyone knew her as "Nanoo" she was the kindest sweetest person you could ever wish to meet but was diagnosed with MND in October 2003 and she died on the 18th September 2004 aged 84 She had bulbar mnd and it progressed very fast, she lost her swallow and her speech so had a peg in Jan 04 Her limbs were very weak especially her legs so was given a wheelchair and electric bed and chair ,she wrote everything down for us up until the end although it was hard to decipher at times she didn't like using her lightwriter and gave it back. She always took one day at a time and never got depressed,she was a religious woman so now hopefully she'll be with my grandad,I still miss her terribly she was my best friend,she left me a letter with the following in I'm free Don't grieve for me,for now I'm free I'm following paths god made for me, I took his hand,I heard him call, Then turned and bid farewell to all, I could not stay another day, To laugh,to love,to sing, to play, Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found my peace at close of day, And if my parting left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy, A friendship shared,a laugh,a kiss, Ah yes,these things I too will miss, Be not burdened...deep with sorrow, I wish you sunshine of tomorrow, My life's been full...
